2012 NFPA 70E Ensures Safety At Your Facility

According to a recent survey published in the Wall Street Journal, 88% of New Year’s resolutions fail.

“Bad habits are hard to break‚ and they’re impossible to break if we try to break them all at once.” (Jonah Lehrer, “Blame it on the Brain”, 2009) As many who have experienced the wrath of an OSHA citation can explain, bad habits cost money. Habits that might not seem so bad like working on energized equipment without a permit, can cost someone their life. Can we break these bad work practice habits by the time the clock strikes midnight? Is it okay to put off the changes your workers need to be safe?

The 2012 NFPA 70E takes aim at some bad habits in your workplace. Herzig Engineering’s 2012 70E training aims to provide you with the tools to correct these bad habits so that your facility does not become a statistic.

Take a look at the following excerpts from your 2012 NFPA 70E:
-Article 110.2(D)(1)(f)
-Article 110.2(D)
-Article 110.3 (H)(1)

Paraphrased respectively below for those of you without a copy:
-70E expects checkups of employee safety performance every year.
-Every three years, each employee must be retrained regardless of qualifications.
-Electrical safety programs must be audited every three years.

OSHA and the NFPA are setting the precedent for accountability. When was the last time your employees were trained? Can you remember the last time your program was audited?

As we turn back our calendars for the new year, resolutions will be made and broken. While few industrial and manufacturing facility employees and supervisors will want to change their way of doing business, the 2012 70E expects us to set tangible goals to prepare ourselves for the rapidly approaching changes of the 2015 such as DC arc flash calculations. This year don’t be part of the 88%.
